Bufù Festival

Sepino, Molise, Italy

Every end of the year and every beginning of the new year, an extraordinary festival unfolds in Sepino, dating back to Norman times.

Bufù Festival.

Every end of the year and every beginning of the new year, an extraordinary festival whose origins are unknown and which is perhaps of Roman origin. Groups of young people invade the streets of the village with primitive instruments, called Bufù, wishing a good end to the old year and a good start to the new one.

This festival is one of the oldest popular festivals in Italy. This celebration is 925 years old. In fact, it began in 1099 when part of the relics of Santa Cristina were returned to the city of Sepino whose lord was the Norman of Viking origin 'Roberto de Moulins'. This year this festival turns 925 years old.

-On the 8th of January , all adult men (since the 80s it has also been open to women who, however, generally refuse the invitation) gather with the town authorities for the "good manners" dinner.

-Day 9, in the afternoon, all the girls (and boys) dressed in white and with a crown of flowers on their hair bring a candle as a gift to Santa Cristina who is the patron saint of Sepino. Symbolically, the Mayor gives each girl a bag full of sweets.

In the evening, for the happiness of having the relics of Santa Cristina back, groups of people begin to ring the bells of the Cathedral every 15 minutes until dawn on the 10th.

-Day 10, religious service and procession.
