Site Overview
The site of the Bishop's Grave
When Greenlanders got their own bishop, in about 1124, he was granted the largest farm in the Eastern Settlement – Gardar (modern Igaliku). Excavations have revealed the remains of the medieval cathedral, where a bishop was buried in about 1200.
The finds from the Bishop's Grave included a crosier and ring, together with the skeleton of a middle aged man. The foundations of the cathedral, which was built of stones over 1m high, can still be visited.
