Gulatinget

GULATINGET
The viking legacy of Gulatinget/”The Gula Thing”: The Thing is a Viking parliament/assembly site and Court, situated in Gulen (municipality) hence the name “Gula thing”.

Gulatinget (The Gulating) was the largest regional ting (pronounced ‘thing’, meaning parliament/assembly) in medieval Norway. It was located in Gulen, situated on the west coast, between the counties of Sogn, Fjordane and Hordaland, from at least AD 900 until 1300.

The Gulating was a legislative body, a court of law and a political assembly. It started as an alting, where ‘all free men fit to bear arms’ had the right to assemble and participate in the procedures. Free farmers met to deliberate amongst themselves, and later in direct negotiations with the king.
